Is there any board (that I can hide behind my TV) that does work as well or better then the Raspberry 4 does out of the box?
With the latest nightly builds, the Orange Pi 3 LTS works just as good as my Rpi4, even for x265. Plus it has eMMC so you dont need an SD card.
And theres 900 of them available immediately on Aliexpress for $35 each. For HTPC use, I will never buy another Raspberry...
put the nightly into the emmc on my OrangePi 3 LTS and so far working great with the onboard ethernet.
it plays all the same videos as my RPi4, boots faster, and it only cost $43 (with shipping) from ali-e!

Do the nightly images for the H6 include phy ethernet driver support for the Orange Pi 3 LTS?
maybe with a gigabit adapter connected to the 3.0 port you can get over 300 or 400Mb/s
do you really need that much speed? Even playing a 4k video my NAS wasn't sending data out any faster than 40mb/ (peak) and usually only around 10mb/s.
but I don't use any streaming services, do those require faster throughput?

its not wifi, its a hardwired RJ45 Ethernet to USB adapter. 100Mbps, USB2.0. Exact model is 9300-USBEL. its at least 10 years old

Its actually not bad though, I just plugged in an old USB-ethernet dongle I had lying around and it works fine through that!
So now my OP3LTS is able to watch h265 videos from my NAS just as good as my RaspberryP4. But it only cost me a quarter of what a RPI4 is going for these days, and it has eMMC to boot (pun?).
sorry, this is probably a stupid question. But what is it about LibreElec that makes kodi run so well?
I read that LE is made to be the bare-minimum OS needed to run Kodi, but what else is there to it?
For instance, I can install and run Kodi on Armbian running on a OrangePi3, but its so slow and choppy that its unusable. But Kodi on that same hardware with the LE operating system runs great.
Obviously LE doesnt have all the unneeded features of Armbian or a separate graphical UI, but does LE also have "better" device drivers or something? Or does it automatically configure Kodi with some tweaks that are missing when i install it manually on Armbian?

I was very excited when my Orange Pi 3 arrived today. I downloaded the LE image for it, fired it up, and was hugely disappointed and confused when the Ethernet port wouldn't work.
Once again I've been burned by my lack of attention to details. The OP 3 i bought is the "LTS" version, which i quickly realized from this forum does not have working ethernet with LE yet. 
It seems that jernej is working on adding phy ethernet support for LTS eventually, so all is not lost. Considering the low cost and high availability of this compared to a RPI4, its going to be a great alternative for h265 videos.
Any update on how close jernej is to completing the update? Thanks.

I was admittedly ignorant about whitelists, I did some research and easily found info on setting it up.
Just to confirm, the info I read told me to set "Adjust display refresh rate” to “On start/stop". I assume this actually makes it adjust refresh rate *AND* resolution, right?

I have resolution set to 3840 X 2160, and I've tried the different refresh rates up to and including 30. 1080p files and 4k files all play fine (h284 and h285). But some old 480p files have some stuttering and major lag in the video (compared to audio) that gets worse the longer you play.
If i lower resolution to 1080 than everything plays fine, but obviously defeats the purpose of buying a 4k TV!
am I missing something obvious here? Thanks for any tips.

I just realized I am a dumb**s. I thought I got a good deal on ebay for $75, but I just realized that the official RaspberryPi site (through American Raspberry Pi Shop) has the 4GB in stock for $64, including shipping.
How much do the 4B's usually cost for you guys?

I just went and picked up a Raspberry 4PiB on ebay for about $75. Seemed a little cheap, but I read you can do /proc/cpuinfo to verify if its really an ARMv8 or if they are selling mislabeled counterfeits.
One question though, I read (on a two year old post some where) that it can do 4k but only with h265 files. For h264 files its limited to 1080. Is that still true?

I've been using Libreelec on several Raspberry Pi's, its awesome!
But now I'm looking for something that can do 4k/H265. I have a couple generic chinese devices with S905W chips, but from what i read in the forums it seems like it will be difficult if not impossible to get them to work.
The Odroid C2 seems to have nearly the same hardware specs, and is offically supported by the USB-SD creator tool, but they are hard to find and expensive.
So what device would you recommend I go out and buy to get 4k/h265 up and running easily? I'm looking for something in the $60 range ideally, if that exists.
