Thanks but I've tried all that and it just does not work.

Thanks fellas - I had a look at the NFS stuff and it's waay over my head. I'll have another go at the SMB thing some time in the next few weeks. One of the only things I haven't tried is doing a full network reset on this pc. I may well have changed some setting in the past in this pc that is stopping it from working with LE. I'm totally fed up with the whole thing right now and I'll take some time to get the enthusiasm to try again later.
-
I'm not sure how I can make the explanation any easier.
1. My LE box refuses to network.2. My LE box can play vids on a USB stick.
Looking around the various forums, I'm far from alone with this, so ->
3. Write a small util that installs into Windows that connects it to the Le Box like an electronic version of a USB cable.
Ignore all of Windows networking stuff. -
I thought of a better analogy to describe it. At the moment the only way I can get my LE box to play videos in to plug in a USB stick with what I want to watch. What I'm suggesting is a software version of a USB cable from the LE box up to the hard drive of the Windows PC. I don't know if that's possible, but it's just a suggestion to possibly make things easier to keep the network shares working no matter what updates Windows gets.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions, but I'm not going to put another second of effort into getting my LE box to work properly. I will do later, but not for the near future. This thread was intended to solve all the networking problems for everyone by suggesting adding a small util to Windows, thus bypassing anything that Windows would normally require.

I've given up after trying for nearly three weeks to get this PC (media server) to network with the LE box under the telly. For the near future I'm going to have to load videos onto a USB stick so I can play them on the LE box, it's otherwise useless now.
I was thinking since it's been sooooo much trouble for a lot of people that would it possible to write a bit code/make a util that loads onto your Windows pc that doesn't use SMB, etc, and is tailored specifically to let the LE box network with any problems? I'm the first to admit I'm not a programmer/developer so it might be a daft idea but it might also be not too difficult and if so most certainly worth the time. Especially since every update to Windows seems to break something. -
Thanks anyway but I'm done with this a**ehole thing. I've spent nearly three weeks trying to get it to work and nothing has worked. I just spent an hour or so trying NFS (the LE box froze every time I tried it, upnp will not show the shared folders) so that's that.
I'll try again some time in the future, until then I'll just plug a USB stick into the LE box and watch vids that way. Thanks to everyone that tried to help.

Thanks for that - I'm going to try to set-up NFS sharing first. If I can't get that working I've had enough of it all and I'll have a break for a while. I can still put files on a USV stick and play them from the LE box.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far. -
Thanks. I may well have no choice, as no matter why I (with a lot of help from people here) just cannot get the smb thing to work. I'll have a search around to see which is the best next option.

Okay I think I have all the screen captures you wanted.
The firewall (W10 Defender) was on, but I tried it again just then with it completely off and there's no difference - still returns an "Invalid Argument"
You mean access this shared folder on this WIndows pc from another Windows pc? I tried that earlier today with no luck.
-
I'm getting close to the point of going postal with this stuff. I'll have to assume that for whatever reason, this W10 pc and the LE box under the telly simply aren't going to ever work together over SMB.
Can someone please run me (and many others no doubt) the other options to get them working?
NFS, upnp, etc. -
After it says it has timed out, "do you want to add this anyway" say yes.
Then reboot,
Then browse to the network you have created.
Good idea, and I tried it but ...... no difference sorry.
Please show the share settings in windows. If it's your windows user then use this user plus the login password for windows
There's screen captures of those a page or two back I think. And in the last video link I posted.
Thanks for trying fellas .... -

Here's a video of what I've done and tried. Hopefully someone can pick up what I've done wrong or missed doing. I really need some help here please!
(I also tried putting some vids in a directory that upnp can access, but that was not successful either. The file didn't show up in the appropriate folder)

This is the guide I used to add a new local user account:
Yep I did exactly that.
Again, you should add some media to your Windows 7 computer - set up password protected sharing and try accessing your media. If it works, then your problem is the Windows 10 computer.
Remember, the Windows 7 computer will have a different IP address.
I don't like the idea of editing a password file using SSH. The "add network location" method should work just fine.
I tried on the W7 pc, I turned on sharing needing a password (Change Advanced Sharing Settings) but it never asks for a password in any menu I can find. However, if I go to Add Network Location in the LE box, then use the IP address of the W7 pc along with the shared folder name, it does try to connect. But as you'd expect since the folder doesn't have a password it won't go any further. If I use the name of the W7 pc, it just does the 'Invalid argument' thing again.
I'm going to record a video of exactly what I'd doing with this W10 pc, hopefully someone can pick up on whatever error I might be making. I've done my best to exactly what's been given to me but it just does not work.

Just going through some of the various network options things, and upnp showed this box. However when I typed in the IP address thing the LE box locked up and I had to re-start it.

I think you have to use username password for a windows 10 share. Use a user with a password for your share
I think I've done that, but if not can you please explain where I need to add/use that?
