I agree, slow SD cards often show those symptoms.
The best and fastest micoSDHC card for AML devices are the Samsung EVO, Sandisk and Lexar 300x Class 10 U1
These are the ones with fast, random 4K R/W speeds. Which is very important.

Further experimental AML S912 updates using John's amlogic-3.14-y-Nougat Kernel and Kodi Leia Alpha1:
The 3GB S912 modded device trees are now included in the following directory:

Xiaomi Mi 3S TV Box: Original Xiaomi Mi 3S TV Box Amlogic S905X Quad Core
I'm not even sure this can run LibreELEC Kodi Krypton - certainly not one of the boxes I've seen people using.
The trouble with recommending cheap boxes is internal hardware, particularly WiFi chipsets - can change month to month - even for the exactly same named AML Boxes. Some do not even have Linux WiFi drivers available for them which makes support impossible.
Basically its all a bit of a gamble, choosing AML hardware unless you go with well knows brands like ODROID, MINIX or WeTek.

I'm posting this here instead of starting a new thread simply for those that want to test John's Nougat-WIP Kernel on AML S912's
Its a very early LibreELEC 9.x Kodi Leia Alpha that is subject to much experimentation and change.
The 3GB S912 modded device trees are in the following directory:
Kodi video playback does work pretty well having said that, I'm using a S912 - MINIX U9.

It's interesting: with copy/pasted functions, in one instance there were pts issues reintroduced in the "standard" h264 decoder, and fixed in the multi-instance decoder with those massive multi-instance decoding commits
I can confirm this as well. Until I re-enabled Multi_dec in the Experimental Kernels, video playback was terrible.
What I can tell you johngalt is that today I did a short playback test of my samples on a devices that came with Android 7.1.1 - all playback issues we are experiencing with Nougat kernel were there, sometimes even worse than on LE. We're fixing Amlogic bugs...
Well no surprises there - seems like ops normal for AML - I suspect this is why we have not seen Xiaomi rush out a AML Android 7.1 Nougat update for their S905X Mi Box.

Thank you, that's good to know. In that case, I can try a S912 build shortly.
I've been running a AML S912 / Kodi v18 Leia Alpha experimental - johngalt Kernel build over the weekend and getting nice results from a MINIX U9.
I have not noticed any video banding, and watched 2 movies over the weekend and did not detect any frame skips at all, I can normally spot frame skips easily.
I will have to do more testing with HDR10 output to my 10bit (non HDR) 4K TV before commenting further.

I was actually watching DVB-T 1080i H.264 and it had annoying Jerkiness during video playback.
Reverting the dec_control to 0 has fixed it for me.
-
I started testing the high bitrate Rogue One Blu-ray remux (39mbit/s average video + audio) with the new build this morning (10bit output).
Unfortunately, out of the 11 frame skips within 10 minutes of playing, at least 6 were "unprovoked", i.e. not triggered by me opening the overlay.

Try setting this parameter to 0 and then saving in autostart.sh
echo 0 > /sys/module/amvdec_h264/parameters/dec_control

I've been testing johngalt 's Franken Kernel using a S912's MINIX U9 running an experimental LE 9.x - Kodi v18 Leia (Agile) with a HiSense 4K TV.
I believe this TV has a 10bit panel (8bits + FRC) - its not a HDR TV.
Android Kodi Krypton & SPMC v16.7.0 using Media Codec Surface with numerous 2160p HDR10 test clips....
Results = Washed out colors and a dull lifeless picture
LE 9.x Kodi v18 Leia with John's Franken Kernel with the same HDR Clips, using:
Results = everything Pops. Far Better color saturation and to my eyes a lot better grey color shading.
I would go so far as to say its the best 4K picture output I've seen on this TV since I owned it.
Thanks for the time and effort you have put into this Kernel John !

AMLogic SOC's do not support Hardware decoding of any 10bit H264 - no matter what Kernel you are using.
So forget about 10bit Anime aka Hi10P aka 10bit H264.
-
Each kernel has different quirks when it comes to HDR=>SDR and colorspace conversion (just as kodi on different platforms (eg before win10 creators update) might have quirks). I recommend sticking with SDR material on libreelec altogether.
This is the most sound piece of advice in this whole HDR colorspace "Adventure".
HDR use at this present point in time belongs firmly in the Android OS, which then has it's own share of issues.

Hi everyone, my last chance to make my s905x works properly is libreELEC...
i'm one of those very unlucky owner of a Sony Bravia and still i've not lost all hopes in make it works without the green/red screen caused by color depth problem (YUV/RGB conversion)
Can someone confirm that in version 8.x.x of LibreELEC is that annoying problem solved? I searched all over internet to find a suitable solution and looks like LibreELEC is the only one that provided it in some way
There is already a dedicated thread about this with solutions:

I suspect whatever HDMI connected display is being used does not have the full suite of display modes available or there is something interferring with HDMI EDID Handshaking on LE startup.
TV's also need to have a Cinema or 24p Movie mode for ultra smooth 23.976fps video playback.
A bit of motion smoothing, set in the TV settings also helps.
The only way to find out what a HDMI display is capable of is, SSH Logging in and:
cat /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap

I have a Wetek Play 2 - would I benefit with changing to kszaq Nougat build for better colour etc, or will there be no difference with Wetek Play 2?
I ask as I've seen discussion regarding S905 vs S905x and I'll freely admit I have no idea what Wetek Play 2 is!!!
The only thing you would see is slightly better initial H264 decoding performance when you skip about video in Kodi on the AML S905 that is found in the Hub/Play2/ODROID C2. So not much at all.
Any video output color differences will be for the S905X only.

But encountered an issue where the box went into a deep sleep mode will not respond to power key on A2 Lite remoteSuggestion for a Workaround:
Kodi Settings > System > Input > Peripherals > CEC Adapter > When TV is switched OFF > Ignore
And I'm assuming this is the correct device tree used (renamed to dtb.img)
