My RPi3 is hidden behind the TV and the power plug is difficult to access. I solved this by buying a remote power plug which works just fine. I guess a wifi smart plug would also do the same thing allowing access via wifi connected devices (Phone, Alexa, Google home etc.).
I'm pretty sure most modern HDD's power down automatically nowadays, so consumption and wear and tear should be minimal.
I had similar problems, and the problem lies with your wifi. Whilst the connection speed might be high you need to determine the actual download speed. Check that the HPTC and RPI2 is handing the data efficiently (No CPU or I/O waits). I slightly improved matters by buying a wifi repeater with ethernet connection, but was not totally effective.
Doing tests, with a connection speed of 98Mb I was only getting 3-6Mb download. You might improve things by buying a much better wifi dongle with extended antenna to get a better input signal - some of the small wifi dongles only have a small antenna.
Or, you could try a 5Mhz dongle if your router handles it - I believe it will work, but don't take my word for it - search on the forum for advise.
I solved the issue by buying a 1Gb homeplug (The one that connects ethernet over your home wiring)
I think you'll appreciate nmon which is available in the LE repository system addons. IMO it is far better than htop and top for monitoring.
The RPi3 is notorious for power problems, especially with "cheaper" power supplies. If you still have issues you could change your power supply for a higher amperage, or think about running the wifi dongle off of a powered hub.
Changing the password of LibreELEC is not even possible at this time.
I guess this is because LE is a R/O system.
Could it be possible to include a script in .config/autostart that changes the password on boot?
I think you should be asking this in the OpenELEC forum - not LibreELEC.
As @chewitt mentioned, the LE method is quicker and easier. The reason being is that SD cards of the "same" size may not actually have the same number of sectors - even if they are the same brand. So win32diskimager may, or may not work.
There is a new tool in Raspbian that will do what you want "PiClone" see The latest update to Raspbian - Raspberry Pi.
I haven't used it but should do what you want.
You can also use dos2unix <filename> to convert.
Also your video cache is wrongly named for Kodi 17. See HOW-TO:Modify the video cache - Official Kodi Wiki
I think upgrade doesn't touch uEnv.txt in any way.

A possible simple question. I'm currently running 7.9.010 on my cubox-i with /storage on an esata SSD, I've tried 8.02 on a normal SD card setup without any issues, so I'd like to upgrade.
The question is - will an upgrade work seamlessly, or will the upgrade put /storage back onto the SD card, meaning I have to manipulate everything again. (Will the upgrade modify uEnv.txt?)

Well Linux Mint 17.03 Rosa works as expected - so it's something to do with your display or drivers.
You could install your version of Mint in a VM and see if you get the same error. If that's Ok, then something in your setup is causing the issue.
If I get time, I'll try installing 17.3 in a VM, if you're unable or unsure how to. I'm guessing cinnamon desktop.
I've just tried it on x86_64 Mint 18.1 without any issues
What hardware are you on and what display are you using?
I'm confused as to what is happening. Try turning everything off - wifi, bluetooth, anything that communicates - it could be a neighbors remote, phone or something. If that fails it could be a motherboard issue.
Try reinstalling and see if that helps. If not a BIOS reset.

No browsers are available as they require an X system.
Are we sure it needs all that work - I have an electric blanket with a bright blue LED that is annoying. A bit of tape solves the problem. Sometimes a simple solution is far better that a more complex one.
