HDMI CEC remote question

  • Hi - I have LibreElec installed on an RPi 3 connected to TV by HDMI. The TV's remote is able to control the RPi, over HDMI-CEC. However, the layout of the remote sucks and doesn't include a number of buttons I would generally like to use. My question is whether I can use some other remote to control the RPi over HDMI-CEC, or is the TV remote the only remote I can use in this manner? Eg. could I set up a universal remote to control the RPi, over HDMI-CEC, without having to attach an IR receiver directly to the RPi? I suppose this would essentially just be using the TV as a glorified IR receiver for the RPi.

    Thanks.

  • You have 2 options.
First, configure universal remote to control your tv, and over CEC also your RPi.
Second, install addon "script.keymap" to configure buttons on your present tv remote.

  • Thanks, just tried those without success. The keymap script is able to reassign buttons that the TV is passing through to Libreelec, but there are some buttons the TV seems to just not pass through. Eg., there is a 'menu' button on the TV remote that brings up the TV's menu. I would prefer to use this button with Kodi, but the keymap script doesn't register it as being pressed. In any event, even if it did, I assume the TV would still open its own menu at the same time the key is pressed.

I had the same issue with a universal remote that I assigned to my TV. Ie. if the TV assumes the 'menu' button for its own menu, then the TV doesn't pass that button-press over CEC to Kodi.

I guess I'll just get an IR receiver for the RPi...
