Is High Definition Audio Supported on Raspberry Pi?

  • I'm running LibreELEC 8.0.0 on a Raspberry Pi2.

When playing MKVs with DTS-MA or TrueHD, audio shows on my Onkyo AVR as Multi-channel PCM.

While I've tried various Audio Passthrough settings in Kodi, the AVR just won't recognize the signal as DTS-MA or TrueHD, even through this same receiver does so with other media players.

Are DTS-MA and TrueHD not supported on Raspberry Pis?

While I tried finding an answer in the forums, most threads don't specifically address RPi's. My apologies in advance, if I overlooked something.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • Just to clarify, passthrough of DTS-HD and TrueHD is not supported on any Pi.
The Pi (at least Pi2 and Pi3) can decode those formats and output them through HDMI as 8 channel PCM.
That is likely to sound identical to the passed through version. (The decoders are bit exact).
