Flatpak / External Helper - Pointer hits virtual wall / Cage compositor pointer constraints not implemented (yet)

  • So this a follow up to my Flatpak audio / display resolution thread, I thought a new post made more sense than added another thing :)

Another issue using Moonlight via the Flatpak is the Wayland compositor in use (Cage https://www.hjdskes.nl/projects/cage/) does not support point constraints, this is commonly used by games the lock the pointer to the game window allowing for infinite mouse movement in any direction, instead of being limited by the desktop size.

Currently without this protocol the mouse pointer will often run into a virtual wall and no further movement is possible, this happens both on a streamed desktop and in games with Moonlight.

There is a PR open to implement this in Cage https://github.com/cage-kiosk/cage/pull/527 but i don't know if or when this will be merged and released. I have built Cage from the branch in the PR and manually copied it to my LibreELEC box and confirmed it working for me, so i can just continue to do this for now.

So this thread is both info for anyone else looking to manually fix the issue, and also an ask to consider creating a patch for the Cage build package or temporarily make a fork of Cage with the fix and build against that.

  • We are currently trying what route might be the best.
The cage maintainer is sadly very unresponive, slow (not a criticism, just an observation) and it sounds like he rules out AI.
So its fair to predict not too much of developement here in future.

So I tested sway that works in general, but is buggy with on screen keyboard.
Others are tested also (its just a side quest to get an idea what might work).

MAYBE (i really dislike this step) we could fork cage and implement the missing stuff there and maintain that.

I try to get onsscreen keboard in too with basically zero percent to succeed.

  • Ok glad the issue is on your radar, hope you find a good solution, I guess you've tried gamescope? But that doesn't provide an on screen keyboard either.

I'll carry on replacing the cage binary for now 😁

  • We need additional onscreen keyboard and volume adjustments and maybe more so turns out cage is not really a perfect fit yet.
Unfortunately, there is quite a large gap here between what is possible and ending up with a giant monster :) We shall see how this turns out.

  • Even a screen saver might be nice, I'm slightly worried about leaving VacuumTube open at some point and burning in my OLED.

But I can see how this is a slippery slope from the whole "Just enough OS for KODI" 😄
