Rpi4 bi-headed kodi+browser?

  • In the past, 4 years ago, there has been some talk about running a browser inside Docker under LibreELEC in Raspberry Pi, even some experimets are reported to have had positive results as in here: Running Xorg on Raspberry Pi through Docker

The reaction seems to have been that the results were just meh, and that you go run Raspbian Kodi+Chrome if you want to do this, one of the main problems being that you cannot share the framebuffer between Kodi and other X11 stuff in LE.

Now time has passed and the new Rpi 4 has a good share of horsepower and 4GB of RAM, and what is more, it has two HDMIs!

For a user, I would absolute love to have one HDMI source attending Kodi, and the other attending *a browser* so I can surf the web with a minikeyboard, that is the only one content venue that is vetoed in current LE. Just imagine it!

Is this technically possible? (for instance, can we have hw-accelerated browser-based video playback, inside docker?)

Could this be done by a casual hobbyist, or would require serious development?

It would be firmly in the serious development category, and it won't be done because if you want to play Kodi on one output and use a browser on the other this is possible today using Raspberry Pi OS using a normal Xorg desktop. LE is focussed on being a dedicated HTPC OS, and we have zero ambition to be a multi-purpose OS from a user-experience perspective.
