Don't autoplay next item in standard playlist

Is there a global override/setting that would force Kodi to never progress to the next video while playing, but rather simply return the user to the playlist?

I'm aware of the "play next video automatically" setting in the UI, but by default this seems to have no effect on standard playlists (like M3Us), only smart ones.

Hope someone has better insight into this than I do.
