x86: scrambled screen after a few seconds

  • I've got an hold HTPC in my guest room running OpenElec 6.0.0 with Kodi 15.2 just fine and stable. And since I found out that it even plays x265, I would like to keep it. (Otherwise I would put in an old rPi2 when I replaced them with odroids C2s, but it cannot play x265.) I need to be able to access my shared MySQL library again, so I tried to update it again. All my other setups run LE8.x.

Sadly every time I try to "update" (=fresh reinstall!) the HTPC, I end up with a system that I can use for a few seconds and then freezes with a garbled screen:

Didn't matter if it was a newer version of OpenElec back in the days or LibreELEC today, it is always the same problem. The graphics chips seems to work, since it shows an image in the beginning and it is supported by nvidia-legacy. I cannot provide a log, since the whole machine freezes completely, I cannot even ping it anymore.

    CPU: AMD X2 215 (2.7Ghz)

    Mobo: Asus M4N78VM

    Memory: 2GB

    Graphics: onboard Nvidia 8200

Any ideas what I could do to solve this or debug it further? Thanks!

    Update: memtest86 ran without issues

  • You are right, but as long as it is working, no need to upgrade it. Thanks for the link, must have seen an old list for nvidia legacy support. Will try it out first thing tomorrow.
