Install ON HDD without complete wipe

    I would like to install LibreELEC on a partitioned hard drive that I have been using with Kodibuntu. I wish to maintain the media I have on the drive and as such it's impractical to do a complete wipe (over 1tb of data)

    Is there a way to install LibreELEC without wiping the drive?
    This OpenELEC Mediacenter - OpenELEC Forum - [HOWTO] Multiboot OpenElec + Windows without Ubuntu install (1/11) is the closest I have come to instructions. Am I on the right path? I have no need for multiboot. I just want a clean install to replace my slightly broken Kodibuntu.

    You are better off just copying the data off the drive and starting fresh or installing LibreELEC onto a thumb drive. Otherwise you will have to do your own partitioning and installation. It's not hard but it's just another route for error.

    If you want to replace KodiBuntu, why do you need a dual boot setup? :huh:


    Anyway, the OpenELEC article is a little outdated but the basics are still correct.

    In short, these are the following steps:
    - Use Gparted to resize the Kodibuntu partition. Resize it 9 GB smaller
    - Create a system partition of 1 GB in EXT4 format
    - Create a storage partition of 8 GB in EXT4 format
    - Remember the device numbers of both newly created partitions
    - Copy the system files of LibreELEC into the system partition folder
    - Edit /etc/grub.d/40_custom and add the LibreELEC menu entry
    - sudo update-grub2 to finalize the menu changes
    - reboot and hold left-SHIFT to see the GRUB bootmenu
