the kodi screenshot function simply copies the contents of the video buffer into a file. As there has been no change on the kodi side, it is to be expected for them to be identical across versions

The kernel part is responsible for how that information is transmitted over the HDMI link, and there is most definitely some significant change - in my setup for the better.

OK. Thank you for the explanation.
So I'm not delusional after all ;)

OK, so here's the comparison. On the left Jarvis "j" build and on the right the new "k" build with nougat kernel.
Screenshots have bad aspect ratio but that's the way they are saved by Kodi screenshot command.
Apparently some of us, including myself, see things that aren't there :)
These screenshots look to me exacatly the same. I really can't see any difference.
So, the real advantage of the new kernel are fixes like no darker screen at boot, fixed brightness / contrast options etc.

I managed to get it to work as a clean install, thanks. But sadly the GUI is dog slow when set to 4K@60Hz, it feels and behaves like it's 30Hz.
And there are still weird problems with playback when the box is outputting 4K@60Hz, the videos look like what you see when you fast forward a VHS tape, only worse.
I was able to watch 25FPS content before, now can't, with the same issue.
Sadly, I'm going to go back to 'J' and live with the judder-y channels.

I may give LE 8 a shot sometime later, maybe it'll work better.

The GUI will be slow using 4K. Box hardware isn't strong enough to deal with 4K. Even at 1080p it's a bit sluggish.
Box specs needs to render all the animations. Kodi skins can be heavy.
If you want smooth GUI buy a powerful box with strong Intel chip and Windows.

People keep talking about differences in picture quality - I don't get that.
Can you quantify what you mean?
I do not see any difference in picture quality between Jarvis and Krypton (on 8 Bit sources).

...And I am testing with untouched Blu-ray remuxes on a calibrated 65" OLED display...

Can you make comparison screenshots or quantify your statements with the help of the Spears&Munsil chroma upsampling pattern for instance?

    I can't. That's only my subjective observation.
Picture seems to be clearer and sharper. Previous builds have softer, foggy picture. Not that it's worse. Just different and I like it better but like I mentioned, it's purely subjective.
Maybe differences in postprocessing are visible only in compressed videos and untouched Blue-ray remuxes don't need it? I really have no idea.
Taking screenshots isn't a bad idea.

    Regarding skipped frames on S905X.
ukmark62 had very similar problem with latest Jarvis "k" build. I have it in newest Krypton "j".
Skipped frame is always in the same place. The test file is Star.Trek.Beyond.2016.1080p.10bit.BluRay.8CH.x265.HEVC.mkv with active Adjust Display Refresh Rate. TV switches to 24p.
I cut out a sample but skipped frame does not show up in it. It appears only when playing file from the beginning and it's very visible at 00:01:24

Things I did and non of them made a difference:
    - played the file via SMB and also from fast USB pendrive
    - changed all 1080 resolutions in Kodi settings (at 50Hz and 59.94Hz I have an impression that playback is smoother compared to 60Hz but it could be just impression). At 1080i playback is very jerky and there are some artifacts on the right side of the TV screen. All of them tested with active Adjust Display Refresh Rate)
    - changed graphics buffors from 2 to 3 in system/display
    - changed skin from one I use (mimic) to default
    - changed audio settings from HDMI to PCM
    - changed values of HQ scallers
    - turned off Adjust Display Refresh Rate (skipped frame is still there)
    - removed my advancedsettings.xml with audio latency

Jarvis plays this file without problems.

    Here's the log:
    QHiO

    I have K1 plus Combo @8.0.1j-test.
I have tried first 10 minutes of the ^^^ movie. Not a single glitch. If this happens with "every movie" I'll search for a problem elsewhere. In your setting, TV, network, NAS, etc... I have also tried some 30GB mkv I found and still no problems. I have a windows NAS server with intel RAID5.

I also have stutters with Krypton builds. Apparently boxex with S905 work better than S905X

I start playback at 1:19:30 on the first Hobbit film (my version is x265/720p low bitrate) and at 1:22:25 the problem occurs.

Can you give the release name of the Hobbit movie for test purposes?
Is it only one stutter you've spoted? And it's always in the same place?
This is kinda weird because stutters have tendency to be random.
The "k" build has a nougat kernel. Picture quality is much better in my opinion.
As a matter of course there must be differences in video processing.
Maybe this one "hobbit" stutter only looks like stutter?
Low bitrate videos have plenty of artifacts. This one could be more visible with new kernel because of differences in video processing.

I tried 7.0.3.012k and I noticed very slight stuttering, so I'm staying with "j". All my files are stored on a 2TB external HDD and played back via the USB port. I should add that 95% of my videos have a frame rate of 23.976, and I have refresh rate switching turned on so that the TV goes into 1080/24p mode. To test for "stutter", I play back a certain portion of the first Hobbit film that has a lot of sweeping panorama scenes (the easiest scene types to detect any stutter).

I have played Hobbit (x264, 1080p, 13GB file) via SMB on 'k' build and didn't notice any stuttering.

I just tested 'j'and the behaviour is still the same. As an added note; the time in the timebar is going back, the screen is just frozen. If I hit play again, I can see the time moving fwd, but the screen is frozen still. If I stop the film, Kodi will prompt to take off again at the time I hit stop and work fine after that.

    Confirmed:
    - freezes (mostly when seeking back)
    - still some frame drops (tested on 1080p h264)
    - frequency switches twice at 30fps files

I get a lot of skipped frames on my TX5 Pro. CodecInfo doesn't show anything but they are noticable visually.

Making a guess here without looking at the code: if your TV supports a fractional refresh (For instance ~23.976hz), but you're manually overriding it as 24hz, this might cause stutters. The new automated framerate implementation of kszaq supports fractional refresh rates properly unlike before.

I have no idea if my TV supports fractional refresh rates. I don't think so. It's an old Panasonic plasma TV.
I cannot recall which build of Krypton did start those stutters.
I will check that again and send a log in a few days.

yatoya instead of modifying the refresh parameters, you can run a simpler advancedsettings.xml with min/max (to catch fractional refresh rates) like so: hAaT

    Does it make any difference?
I've been using it as well but didn't see any difference.
What exactly are fractional refresh rates?

after more testing, I don't get a single skip frame (visually, and using 'CodecInfo) and power control works fine on my M8S II :)

Just tried to installtointernal via microSD, same result. black screen no boot. like box was dead.

during install everything looked good, and went as planned.

    im out of ideas.

My box came with rooted Android so I installed TWRP on it. Without it the toothpick method did not work for me. I don't think it has something to do with installing to internal but I know that some new Android firmware are blocking booting from USB and microSD.
I know it's not the case but maybe there is an older firmware for your box (or newer, check both) that make some changes?
And try installing TWRP on your box.
There's an app in Play store that installs TWRP but not every box will work with it.
Still there are methods to install it manually.

Did you try install to internal from microSD card or just from USB?
    It's worth a try.
