1) Which files? LibreELEC's system files are on the readonly system partition in /flash.

2) LibreELEC has its own backup/restore tool in the Settings Add-on. It includes the thumbnail cache folder. However, it does not backup the entire LibreELEC system section. You can use proper disk imaging tools for that. Transferring/copying Kodi setups to other computer OS clients is not 100% possible. Windows and Linux folder paths really do not get along. Also binary add-ons do not mix on a different OS.

3) Please note that the word "build" has pretty negative aura on it when it comes to Kodi. More often than not do such "builds" have video piracy add-ons onboard, which is a big red flag for Kodi and LibreELEC teams to halt their support. I hope this is not the case with your Kodi setup. Such add-ons are known to disrupt Kodi core functionality, who knows even the connectivity to your Kodi remote app.

Atom-like "computers" such as the Compute-stick were a problem because of the 32-bit BIOS environment IIRC. LibreELEC is 64bit only now.

An RPI 4 or even 3B+ with LibreELEC will run circles around such devices.

And how are you gonna do that with only 1GB?

How about removing some of the lesser used fonts?

AMD apu/gpu support from back in the day wasn't all that great, it was usually a hit or a miss. AMD itself didn't care all that much about Linux then, so video drivers had to be reverse-engineered to make things happen. That has changed since Ryzen came along.

You could also try installing a full blown Linux OS like Ubuntu, and install Kodi itself. The available driver package could help, and perhaps installing AMD's own driver is necessary. But again, support for the older AMD graphics was "meh". Installing it on a bootable USB drive could even prove faster than using the onboard 5400rpm HDD.

So IMHO, in short: if it works (even with an older LibreELEC or even OpenELEC version), fine.

If it doesn't work, you'll have yourself a new techno book end.

1GB is on the low side these days no matter what. The 1GB version of the RPi and also other devices have proven to give problems in video processing. Try getting the 2 or 4GB version if possible.

How many fonts are there in your ./Fonts folder, how much are the file sizes combined?

FYI, "latest" is not a version number. We currently have stable releases as well as (nightly) test builds, so 'latest' can be something else than you indicate.

Also try bypassing the Plex route, and play files directly/locally on the J3455. It should be play h264 videos with ease.

That's quite a 180-degree turn, hehe. One thing funny enough where the RPi 4 is faster is scrolling through long video listings... How's that for a smooth experience. Or perhaps my Asrock J5005 board is just lazy.

I'm using a USB30-SATA cable directly to an original 2009 OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD (yep, still works) on a RPi 4GB, and it has no reboot problems. Perhaps the controller in your SSD casing(?) is a bit allergic to LibreELEC's plain Linux flavor.

Having a solid (not see-through) casing like the Flirc case will also dim the leds pretty much to zero. I have no complaints on them in the bedroom darkness.

But the code is always a nice addition for all of us geeks.

The v1 B+ model has a full sized SDcard slot, the RPi2 has a microSD card slot IIRC.

That depends on your definition of "cheapish", and your worldwide location. A Raspberry Pi 4 (2GB+) set will be some 90-100 euro, a "full" pc box upto 3-4 times that.

All RPi have built-in CEC support for easy control, x86 PC's will need a separate USB-CEC dongle (40 euro? + shipping) for that. The RPI needs internet access for setting & using the correct date/time, a PC has its CMOS + battery for that. There are separate CMOS time modules for a RPi, but it adds to the cost.

Perhaps you can find yourself a 2nd hand (not too old) M-ITX board with Intel graphics and a ditto casing so you can add the 2.5" drive internally: better cooling and no need for the enclosure. A PICO psu will ensure further silence.

The LibreELEC disk image contains both partitions. A static 512MB system partition, and the initially small data partition that will be resized at the first boot of LibreELEC. An image writer cannot just "forget" a partition.

Check the SD card with a bootable tool like GParted. Check both partitions on stuck to being read-only.

Try Rufus in Windows, it created working SD cards for me.

You could try CoreELEC instead with more recent Kodi versions.

I had an initial hiccup with 20.04 using NFS as well. I went to using 18.04 instead which seems more stable and it "works" for me.

AFAIK, none of the 3D video variants are currently working properly on a RPi4.

For displaying 3D (and 3D into 2D), using a RPi3B+ is the best approach for now.

Which LibreELEC version are you using? The best results at the moment are perhaps gotten using LE 9.2.x.
