Best way to speed up a PC regardless the system? Get a (cheap) SSD, not a HDD. There are Kingston 120GB SSDs now for 23 euros in shops.

A typical 2.5" HDD is usually a 5400rpm disk, so it's by far the slowest part of the machine.

I don't unusual large stops between components.

The j3160tm-ITX is a 6W TPD Celeron processor, so what were you expecting?

You can keep the original file for the VCD player, and use a converted version for your other media players.

It seems already that plenty of other media players also do not support this odd/old format. A converted copy would help IMO.

SMBv1 is a basically a Swiss cheese when it comes to network security. Google for 'WannaCry' if you want to see the outcome of that.

XP is very unlikely to have SMBv2 support anyway. The 7 and 10 versions will probably have been upgraded to a default SMBv2 by now.

You can change the minimum SMB protocol in the LibreELEC Settings Add-on to SMBv1, and even choose the legacy option.

Just don't come to us when a sudden network intrusing has taken place afterwards.

But on Ubuntu 18.04 and on LibreElec 8.25, when I browse my workgroup for SMB shares, I cannot see any samba servers, even my windows pc.

Kodi + LibreELEC now default to SMBv2 (and up), and SMBv2+ no longer supports network browsing, so you will need to add your sources manually via "Add a network location...". SMBv2 also requires a user account with full credentials, meaning a user with a password. Seeing that you use Ubuntu, that shouldn't be a problem.

All 4 clients were updated to Leia but 2 of the clients (both LibreElec ) continued to use the MyMusic60.db and MyVideos107.db.

Sorry, but that is not possible. If an uptodate MySQL database version is not readily available for a certain Kodi build or a previous MySQL database version cannot be upgraded for whatever reason, a Kodi client will fallback to its local database of the latest version, and not use a previous major MySQL database version. Kodi databases are simply not backwards-compatible. Double-check your kodi.log file for details, and provide it via pastebin if necessary.

It is possible that LibreELEC 8.95.002 does not use MyVideos116 but 115 or 113 instead (it's sometimes hard to keep track of all changes between the various test builds), then you will temporarily need to use a nightly Milhouse LibreELEC build for using a compatible database. As long as Kodi is still in the development stages and Leia 18 is not yet finalized, people should be aware that differences can exist between the various test builds from different sources. As long as Kodi 18 is not "production-ready", aka 18 final is not yet released, jumping between test builds can have its challenges.

LibreELEC has its own roadmap and build releases. Whatever Debian or CoreELEC are doing during the whole lead-up to Kodi final is up to them. I'm sure that LibreELEC 8.95.003 will use video database version 116 once it is out. Last-minute changes in the database schemas during the RC phase have been very uncommon anyway, and should have been avoided to begin with.

In case of "overscan", this must be fixed on the TV itself. Every modern TV has a setting to display a computer screen 'one on one', so that the ancient souvenir of over-projecting an image onto the screen is no longer necessary.

I've stopped the testing of the MariaDB add-on, as my SSD is not as cooperative as I had hoped. It's possibly suffering from drive errors which results in unexpected behavior. Not something you want with a server application.

So for now it's back to Ubuntu + MySQL.

Although Kodi 18's final release is getting close, it's not there yet. And Team LibreELEC will need some additional time for syncing all the various builds for the different supported hardware. Kodi is on RC5 currently and *should* be the last RC. But... there is always Murphy's Law.

So if you want the stable build, go for 8.2.5, you will be able to upgrade later easily. 99.9% of all settings will be used in LibreELEC 9.x if you are sticking with official add-ons.

You can try/test LibreELEC 8.95.002 as well. It's stable for normal operations.

You can find the downloads for the Raspberry Pi 2/3 models at the downloads page. There is an option in the install to "Show all" downloads, including the current test builds.

Personally, I prefer booting from SSD (and I know it is not what the question asked) As you have a RPi3 it's possible to boot from USB without a SD card. A USB SSD caddy is about £8 and a 120Gb SSD is around £20 a good alternative to a SD card (Albeit a *bit* more expensive)

I'm doing that right now, and running the MariaDB server add-on on it for metadata sharing. It looked okay, but there seem to be some incompatibilities with my USB/SSD combo and the Rpi 3B+. It either seems to only cache files and not actually store them... (a newer Linux kernel issue??). Also, returning to the last watched video in a listing does't work all the time.

AFAICT, this didn't happen when I used the full Raspbian setup, so I may go back to that solution.

And, LE's MariaDB addon seems to have a quirk with the "Recently added TV episodes".It has a weird time-out problem. The regular MySQL server doesn't seem to have a problem with those.
