I tried random video files from my HDD library, both with and without MMAL and everything plays smoothly with hyperion working both using external or internal grabber config file.
In my case, it is only with internal kodi video grabber hyperion, netflix and subtitles activated (also minor issues with kodi UI overlay, but it doesn't matter because it is something that is not there when playing a movie/tvshow daily).
I discovered new issue, maybe it is related with what JohnWayne111 is suffering.

Easy to reproduce:
- I play netflix at 1080 with hyperion active. OK
- I activate subtitles, then image goes crazy&black every few seconds, to test it, I simply pause the video and everything is going so crazy (00:15:00).
- I deactivate hyperion, it works ok (00:30:00), I re-activate hyperion, it goes crazy (00:37:00).
- I deactivate subtitles, resume playing in order to disappear previous onscreen subtitles then I pause again. Everyting is OK (00:49:00).
So, my conclusion: something is wrong with subtitles and overlay UI graphics (without subtitles, some crazy flashes can be seen when appearing player interface when pausing or subtitles activation/deactivation notification e.g.00:07:00).
EDIT: this is happening ONLY whithout external grabber, just with hyperion getting kodi's video signal. If I force to use the signal from the external video grabber by switching priorities in config json file, everything works OK.
I discovered my low res issue origin, it was related to inputstream addon "stream selection= manual" setting, now it has good quality.
So in my escenario Netflix at 1080 with hyperion works ok, no black screen by far.
I don't know what setting I toggled or what happened but now netflix videos have very poor quality... but surprise! hyperion works ok with them... I disabled resolution limit in both netflix and inputstream addons but still very low quality video stream...
I limited to 1080 both netflix and inputstream addons, since my TV is fullHD, but the same issue: If I play any file from my HDD everything is OK, but if I play a netflix video, lights work ok but TV image is black with the notification: "Invalid Signal resolution". The funny thing is that if I connect with VNC I can see that netlfix is playing OK... and also, if I stop the netflix video the screen doesn't come back, I need to reboot the Pi.
Next I'm going to try deactivating hyperion before playing a netflix video.
I upgraded my RPi2 to a 2Gb RPi4 last friday... My main objective is to avoid using my PS4 to watch netflix and HBO while keep using my ambilight system.
After first and basic setting steps I have both Hyperion and netflix working fine. I have an HDMI splitter with CEC support and a USB video grabber and also, hyperion is working with all HDMI surces (PS4, Switch...). My ambilight system is an old Lightberry kit (non HD).
I still need to test is throughly because this weekend I hadn't enough time but my point is that hyperion works ok with netflix addon in my RPi4.
EDIT: maybe issue is related with source resolution? last day I tried a documentary episode and it worked, this morning I tried The Irishman and I get black screen while lights were working ok... I need to figure out how to display output info abour current playing resolution...
It's an environment variable. I set it in the systemd service that I run ES from, don't know how it's launched in this addon.

By the way, I spent whole day trying to compile and it worked but the binary I get does not run in LE 9.2 beta... segmentation fault!! , so if we can get it working jus with that variable fix will be awesome
I really don't know... I never could compile Emulationstation by myself so I just grabbed it from Escalade's build, now it doesn't work and the one in latest escalade's build doesn't also, so there is no fix right now... I am still trying to compile it but no luck...
yes, it seems emulationstation is reaching the end of its way in gamestarter repo...

This beta must work in Rpi 2, 3 and 4... (also Generic devices) but I didn't test it by myself yet...
Testing is needed ( or ... RPi4 needed XD )!!!

I can confirm that latest RA addon beta version doesn't work in official LE9, so we must wait until LE 9.2 becomes official to update repo.

Yeah, me too. But I mean working in official LE9 release that is LLibreELEC-RPi2.arm-9.0.2.img.gz. I need to test the latest addon in that LE version, id it works I will include it in repo, if it doesn't I will wait until LE9.2 become official.
Also I tested in Generic PC running LE 9.2 beta and it works ok.

About RPi4, I tried to crosscompile using lakka's LE9.2 branch but it fails, I will continue trying but not now... maybe when I get a RPi4 myself...

I need some feedback/testers before include it in Gamestarter repo, just RPi 2/3 and Generic, sorry RPi 4 owners...
It seems it fails when launching retroarch within EmulationStation because it does not find this lib "libxkbcommon.so.0", it should be in /lib folder in retroarch addon path, and it seems it is there because when launching retroarch directly it works... it is weird... You can try to "update" your retroarch addon to a lowest version. Also you can try to update your LibreELEC to version 9.

Since kodi is killed to launch emulationstation and retroach, only way to exit emulationstation and go back to kodi is using a bash command, you can do it via ssh but I think you can't using your remote, since remotes connect to LibreELEC using Kodi's JSONRPC...
