The previous S805 MXQ M12 metal cased box was very reliable indeed and worked extremely well with EmbER whereas the plastic cased cheaper alternative was flawed with so many cheap nasty copies and at least 4 different main boards discovered but with only one of them compatible with the EmbER firmware. So in this case the metal cased units were synonimous with consistency and better quality overall and as I say worked extremely well. Certainly not the cheapest of boards by MXQ which are a pretty well known brand and indeed were recommended by the EmbER developers themselves based on quality and reasonable good price, so will defend them on that score. This new MXQ M12CX has a great spec

I've got some bad news for you Ray.
MXQ IS NOT A BRAND. Period !

None of these boxes except maybe Beelink are consistent with their Hardware and Software.
The Wetek, Odroid boxes fall into a different Quality Category.

The Enybox X1 is promoted as a superior box to the MXQ 4K Pro and the spec seems to indicate this.

Where on Earth are you reading and believing this stuff.
I think you need to read and not believe everything you read on the internet Ray.
    Especially Paid Bloggers and Reviewers.

As I said I have ordered an Enybox X1 1/8GB which also has a metal case, but nobody here seems to already use one for LibreElec though they are being well promoted online and again a great price for a nice looking good spec box.

Why do you go looking and Buying Obscure Named Chinese Branding boxes that aren't mentioned by LE Members as working or at least tested with issues. Metal boxes are not part of the Hardware and Specs.
Decent Wifi , Decent Quality Card Reader , Fast eMMC flash and a decent Board with Thermal design etc is what we hope for when buying a box.
I've just googled this Enybox and it is pretty thin on details. The Hardware specs i have found are nothing special. Way overpriced.

I already have several folk here with this MXQ M12CX box now and want to help them too with this problem. The box is such a great looking and well constructed metal cased box and works in all other respects so it would be a shame to not have this one fully working. IMHO one of the best looking and well priced boxes available on the market that I have seen and read about

Again the same thing puzzles me on why you would have gone for this box. Same trouble finding info with Googling this thing.
You might want to refine and filter out rarely tested or not tested at all boxes using LE.

You may have Spoofed ram , bad flash , bad wifi chips or inadequate heat dissipation with no thermal design eg: No Heat Sink or no Heat Pad with thermal paste. Open it up and see what's in there. I always open these things up. I can't help myself.

I have an external HDD, 4TB western digital, mac formatted.

Mac Formated ??? What format did you use in Disk Utility to format. ?? Plug it into your Mac and Get Info.

My second issue is also related to external HDD. I see it on the network, but I can't copy anything onto it. It just gives me an error.

I am not being smart but are you trying to copy files larger than 4.2gb ?? This may have something to do with the Format of the hard drive
or you may only have read only in permissions.
Should set hard drive to read/write permissions everyone on your mac.

But when I restart the device, it won't boot to LibreELEC. Only to recovery mode, when the external hdd is plugged in. When I remove it, the device boots to LibreELEC as normal.

That is strange as i thought that USB LE could only boot from one USB Port. Since you are booting from one USB Port already , i don't know what is happening there. kszaq can confirm my thoughts on this as wrong.

Quick question: If I set up an SD card with the dtb for my 1GB/8GB Nexbox, configure LE how I want things, and just swap the dtb for the 2GB/8GB when I want to run it on my other box, is it likely that I'll run into any problems? In testing so far it seems pretty much OK, but I'm more or less wondering if there's any sort of first-time-run automatic configuration that I should be concerned about changing the dtb after I've configured everything based on another.

    Cheers

Do an LE Backup of your configuration and use that to restore from previous Backup.
Do a fresh install for your 2gb/8gb box.
That's my way of doing it.
Less margin for error and testing Temp Enabled / Disabled etc.
    Eliminates Variables when issues arise.

I have the same dilemma. I can't get back to android after installing to nand. Anyone has a strategy?

You need your original Recovery and Device Tree from your Android Firmware to get back into recovery.
Copy them to an SD Card , Power off box completely from power supply.
Insert power supply whilst holding reset button and wait for recovery screen.
Flash your Android firmware from SD Card.

Doesn't look like it's booting the card I'm assuming Xiaomi have some type of secure boot so bootloader has to be unlocked to boot unsigned code
I applied for bootloader unlock we'll see when I'll get word from Xiaomi

After you have the SD Card prepared with LE.
Add a Fake Zip File (Anything a text file and zip it)
Use the Update app in Android and point it to the Fake Zip as the update file.
    See what happens.

I haven't gone Krypton with this box

I can't seem to install this. I've tried all the suggested methods in the OP with both a USB and sdcard. When I hold the reset button it just shows the S905X boot logo (as it does usually) but then hangs there. 'reboot update' in a terminal emulator does the same. 'reboot recovery' boots into a recovery menu but then I can't do anything from there. There's an option to install from sdcard but it won't mount it. Any ideas?

    Your Box is ?
    1 or 2gb ram ?
    Ethernet 100 or 1000 speed.
    Device tree you used ??
You burnt the image to SD Card ?????

kszaq very good results for most s905 chip boxes using Temp Sensor ENABLED with no Freezes including This "h" version. #1
    Is no Freezes a Bug ?? HA !! ;)

If you get a decent SD card it doesn't matter what's the internal memory size, you are only limited by card size.

I run internal LE 99% on my boxes but be aware of some boxes have really slow card readers.
The worst card reader with slowest speed is my TX5 Pro S905X 2GB/16GB
On internal install it is great. Wifi ac is amazingly fast.
These are the obstacles when choosing these boxes. :)
