A quick google suggests it's a pretty standard S905x box, normally sold with android marshmallow. What am I missing?

I think you will get absolutely no help on this forum with this Branded Box.
It looks like a ripped off LibreELEC OS and sold for profit.
Go and ask the seller what they suggest you do.
I mention the chip, its an Amlogic S805. So I'm using the latest build of LE for this chip, v.8.0.1a, via SD card boot with Android internally. The box brand is MXQ (OTT).

Try either and see if the remote works with one of them.

The issue I am currently having is that the addons don't update automatically.
No notification of available updates, nothing.
The only way to resolve is to manually check for updates.
First check you have manual or automatic updates in Kodi Settings.
Also check you have notifications turned on for updates.
If everything is corrected and still don't work it may be a long delay in wifi loading ?
I am not able to get some of the keys to work on my Beelink S82 (aka Tronsmart S95) remote (using an MXQ S805 box). They are: Power, Home, Volume, Mouse, Menu. When I try reading codes for these buttons with the "dmesg -c" command in terminal, nothing happens. None of those keys gets returned. Not even the keys on the Beelink remote that do work under LE. Only the keys the MXQ's stock Visson remote get return codes in terminal. Is there a trick to this I am missing?
What chip is in this box of yours ?? Confusing in your post MXQ S805.
What LE Version are you using ??
Are you running LE Via SD Card boot with Android still internally.??
Even the installtointernal gives no errors. Only problem when i installtointernal and reboot, the screen stays black, nothing happens.
Just in case you missed this bit. #1 Quoted below.
CAUTION: If your box has a non-standard partition layout, you will see an error when trying to boot from internal memory for the first time. To solve it, you need to boot one more time from SD card and run
installtointernal
again. This means booting via your USB and repeating the install to internal command.
Not sure if this will fix issue because you mention no error is shown.
I just tried to locate the reset button inside the av port...it is definitely not there as i pretty much almost inserted the entire toothpick into the port and have not hit anything yet... any other ideas?
Turn the box upside down. There is a tiny pin hole which is the reset switch access hole.
It is tiny and a paper clip will fit inside. Press and feel a click. That is the sound of the reset switch.
Your box is a re branded Tx5 Pro.
Hi All,I have just discovered this awesome site after I had horrible playback issues with Kodi after upgrading to 17.1 on my Minix Neo U1.
I have everything setup and Kodi is running fantastic. I love that I can boot back into Android when I want.
I was just curious what the difference was between the build with the temp sensor disabled and the regular build ? I just chose the 1st one (temp sensor disabled) and it seems to work without any problems.

Curious if there is any working image for this platform.
I have been asked to flash a friends box manufactured by this company but i am not game due to the Linux Custom Firmware that is flashed on this thing. If you have their Android Version it may be a little easier as they offer the image on line.
The Linux Image they will not supply should things go pear shape.
I will watch with curiosity should you attempt an SD Card Boot.
