Same problem here. And your solution fixed also my rp3 running 8.90.006. I did not have issues with previous alphas, though.

I can report that alpha 10 fixes it for me. Rpi3 with ps3 remote.

In my setup I also use pimon for turning off the monitor.

Same issue over here. Raspberry Pi 3 with ps3 remote. This is very unfortunate and I hope some dev can fix it before the final release.
