I'm leaning towards getting a HAMA remote , good reviews and being infra-red you don't need to worry about Wireless or Bluetooth working.

This guy likes the HP MCE remote.
I've noticed a couple of Cherry Trail boxes for the same price as the new Amlogic S912 boxes so you seem to get a lot for the money.
Though i'm guessing these Cherry Trail boxes need a remote.

When i asked around about a S905 player lots of people rated the BeeLink range but considering people rate things on discount bargain deals rather than hardware spec it's hard to tell the difference between the s905 players.
I'm still uncertain if the 23.976 fps / 29,97 fps frame rate stutter has been fixed on these S905-905X boxes.
I've got a Wintel Pro CX-W8 (Cherry Trail), and with 4.8 kernel it's working quite well. I've got an RPi3 as well, and it's slow in comparison. The internal wireless and BT is not working, but other than that it's quite good.
Does the Wintel have a Fan?
When you say the Raspberry is slow in comparison do you mean as in it's noticeably slower or annoys the crap out of you slower?

If you play files from a file server or NAS it's really not a problem.
Sadly i sold off my NAS drive a year ago and now have a normal drive with my current Netgear player so by the time i price in a decent NAS drive i may as well buy a NUC.
Everything seems to be a pain.
RPi3 is a solid choice.
Sadly the 100mb Lan is a deal breaker as i will be moving large files about.
I see people have tried the Gigabit USB to LAN converters but they are still limited to 30Mbps and bottleneck the crap out of the Raspberry.

Is there not a player or hardware setup that works with the official builds that gives the least amount of issues?
On any given day there's a choice of 4-5 different boxes/remotes available and they're proving to be quite adaptable in figuring them out
Any of those that you would recommend for the elderly relatives?

It seems to be everything i look at has issues as i've just been looking at cherry trail boxes. 
I know nothing is perfect but is there a setup with remote that has the least amount of issues?

What remote are you using with your NUC as that's still a sticky point with me with what to get.
Because the S905 devices have don't have working web browser in LibreElec, generally they run outdated kernels, usb ports often lack sufficient voltage for all usb devices, support often gets dropped sooner than it does on x86-64 hardware.If there was an S905 device that ticked all my boxes and worked with my tvcapture card I'd have one already. In the meantime I'm running a braswell nuc.
When i was asking around about these new S912 players it was suggested by a couple of people that is best to just use the Android that comes with Amlogic boxes and use LibreELEC on Intel setups.
By your post it makes sense now.
I assume it must be something different to Cisco's Deep packet inspection as people have been getting past that for years using HTTPS and VPN.
