Yes, lirc comes with LibreELEC.
Modprobe is still used however I would put the module name in a file called
/storage/.config/modules-load.d/nuvoton-ir.conf
Instead of using autostart.sh

Systemctl start lircd won't work. We activate lircd via udev.

You need the .tar file. OpenELEC cannot update from .img.gz files

It says this on our download page.

Yuck. Better to convert that to systemd.mount files and let systemd take care of it.

Most likely you just need to drop in a lircd.conf into /storage/.config/lircd.conf for your remote, then reboot.

Not really sure what you are trying to do? Do you mean having you're sources in kodi set as sshfs? How does that make it laggy? Can you not use any other methods? NFS or SMB?
