i am guessing that to boot from the HDD will be much the same as setting up the RPI3 to boot from USB, we will need the latest firmware from the NEXT branch and program the OTP, once done, prep the HDD and good to go. Hope my CM3L has been delivered so then i can test this tonight.
How do I become a cm3 tester on this side of the pond?
If you have a Slice, then just buy the CM3, and swap it with the orignal 
MikeBuzz You can also test with the builds I've posted to the team in Slack. Things look good to me, but I don't use the lirc function.
I will test those tonight once home, i build the master last night which included the patch Milhouse mentioned above and it seems the lirc is functioning, but as per the older build, with the patch the right direction key works only once, after that it will no longer respond to right presses, but all other directions work fine, rebooting that same happens every time, rolled back to 7.90.008 and all works as it should also 009 does not show any issue

I do have a disk installed, the case only gets very slightly warm, (28C top of case, with CPU at 55C) so I don't forsee any heat related problems, the case is a big metal sink and radiator.
You need to remember that the CPU is on a board, which is slotted into a memory style connector, when you put the board in, it is inserted in the socket at an angle, say 30Deg to the main circuit board and then pressed down until it clicks in place, approximately parallel with the main circuit board, (see Gordons photo) so there is quite a lot of up/down 'spring' in the CM board, which will easily take up any thermal expansion, it will mean you can't make the heat sink to CPU thermal connection very tight, just touching, with thermal paste as a buffer, will be the way to go.

I am using the following at the moment
AMEC THERMASOL - FCH25255T - HEAT SINK, 25MMX25MMX5MM, CERAMIC | CPC UK
Its seems to have fixed the temp hitting 80C while updating the library, but i am still not happy with the temps i am getting, just sitting idle its hitting 57C
I have tested a standard RPi heatsink and it helped a little, I am now awaiting delivery of a ceramic finned heatsink.
I like Gordon's idea to have copper between the CPU and case, need to see if can measure the gap between the 2 to get a block machined in the ceramic one is not enough
The CM3 will definitely need some form of heatsink, I get the temp gauge when updating the library, will have a test with some heatsinks this weekend

Have just flashed your build to my CM3 
works perfect, tested a few films and its so much smother than the CM1, and Libreelec feels more polished than OE.
Is there a plan to make Slice an officially supported platform or will it remain community?

I understand that you might have a pre production cm3, how does it handle x265?

Ok, i have tested with the following in shutdown.sh
/bin/ping -c10 192.168.6.1 1> /storage/test.txt 2>&1
on OE 6.0.3 i get 10 ping responses recorded as sucessful
on LE 7 i get 1 response and the rest time out
PING 192.168.6.1 (192.168.6.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.6.1: seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.963 ms
ping: sendto: Network is unreachable
So it would seem that in OE6 its waiting for the shutdown to complete before disabling networking but LE7 this is disabled straight away
