the downloads are served via mirrors also over ftp - so you gain nothing with ssl there
We serve hashsums via ssl that could be used to check for correct files (reminds me to add the links to the download, upps).
Remember also Windows updates are server via http and it is not less secure due that!

Pls check what Samba (SMB) version you use at the synology (there is somewhere an option).
it should set to min=2 max=3 then it should work ootb
its likely due the removal of the VERY old smb1 protocol (Windows95-XP)

Auto updates are done manually from us and not automatically done if we push the images.
We need to consider server load and stability and ofc sometimes we just missed it 
Chrome is not possible at the moment, because we don't use X11 - it may be possible through docker - but nothing we have ready to use.

This driver should be supported at LE9, LE8.2 is too old for this HW.
Unlike the Kodi repository we have all versions that are at the repo also at the addon.xml.
That means everything that was updated in the past is there listed as fallback.As soon your Kodi updates the repo you get the updates.
If you update the repo you have 100% all versions we ship.
didn't tried 9.1 but 9.0 didn't showed that behaviour at 15.x

there are not addons yet for 9.1 because we wait for the breaking openssl merge
9.1 is VERY EARLY very nightly version of LE so don't expect full support yet.
btw I won't update the drivers for 9.0.x because they are likely breaking something
linux is horrible stability wise at his dvb drivers so its russian roulette at every bump, thats why we have 3 drivers to choose, most of the times one of 3 is working
