I had the same issue on my Cubox-i4pro, just started using LibreELEC after years on OpenELEC. In the end I figured out that switching the refresh rate is probably causing it to hang.
bigbab, try disabling Settings / Player / Videos / Adjust display refresh.
vpeter, what's the difference in your build? Guess it's using a different kernel.
