Some watchdog daemon which would restart kodi or whole system would be nice. I think in the past we already have this included. Not sure why this functionality was removed.

I think there is ongoing work on newer kernel (maybe even mainline) from Solidrun,. So there is always hope

Also I think libcec-3953f8d fixes this issue (forgot which commit exactly). Because on RPi there were similar issue. -
Driver should be backported but I'm no expert on this. I saw one patch on odroid forum but it is not available anymore.

If script with #!/bin/sh doesn't work on Ubuntu it is something wrong in the script.
Also this doesn't make script executable - only tells which shell to use to execute. You still need execute permission set on the file.
