From what you have explained (and a very detailed report it was) - you have tried everything that is possible. Either your box is not supported, a firmware upgrade is needed or there are internal (emmc) problems.
As it doesn't work properly on ANY OS, there has to be another issue. By rights, LE with gxl_p212_1g should work on just the SD card.

Maybe: Can you provide a step by step explanation of what you mean - use screenshots to add emphasis.
The main menu can be changed in settings.

AFAIK this is not possible. On these sort of boxes the OS is installed in firmware and is not easy to modify. Also by rights, Sky still own the box even if you have had an upgrade.

I've been running a RPi3B with a RPi DVB hat with the boot and storage on an external SSD for over a month now, without any issues.
I use TVHeadend as a backend and have tested it with 3 simultaneous HD recordings (All on the same MUX) with only a few transmission errors. A USB DVB stick may not be as good.

As you didn't share what your python script does it's difficult to comment.
I think your issue is that you are trying to do it in real time, rather that using time to you advantage. (If you can have a *small* delay)
So something like.
Synchronize time on both machines
start video at time + 2 seconds

If it still doesn't work, then it's probably best to see if *ANY* RPi operating systems work with it. (Raspbian, OSMC). As I doubt anyone else has one of these devices, it's going to be almost impossible to diagnose or test.
As a last resort, you could try:
modprobe 8192cu
and see if that works.

Just for information to anyone else viewing this thread:
If you are running an earlier release < LE 9 on an RPi2/3 and wish to use the SD card on a RPi3A+, you will need to upgrade to LE9 first.

Due to the kernel changes, LE on the RPi3A+ only works on LE 9 so you'll need to install the latest alpha build Here
