Write LE to usb on a rpi1,2,3?

What i want to do is to write LE in my raspberry pi 1, not on my sd card but in my USB instead.

I see that in LibreELEC.USB-SD.Creator.Win32 there is an option "select your USB stick or SD card". So if i write the image in my USB stick, must i use an empty sd card+the usb to boot the image in my rpi? I am a little confused..

AKA. you need to program usb boot mode (which requires a working boot already)
